Protein-Style Tex Mex Burger

We all love a good burger, but when you’re trying to lose weight, it seems to not be the best option for your meal plan. Yet many members of our weight loss centers have discovered that you can indulge in a protein-style burger without throwing your weight loss plan off track. The recipe below lets you indulge in this good old American classic with a twist, while loading up on some important nutrients.

To make this meal as healthy as possible, opt for lean, grass-fed beef. Grass-fed will provide the most nutrients, and by choosing a lean protein, you’re helping your body build more lean muscle mass, which is fundamental to a successful weight loss plan. The tomatoes in the salsa pump this recipe up with the very beneficial antioxidant lycopene, while the sliced avocado loads you up with healthy omega-3 fatty acids and other essential nutrients. By replacing the bun with lettuce leaves, you trade up the fattening simple carbs for some nutrients. The results is a very filling, delicious meal that will make you forget about an old school burger on a bun.

Ingredients
1 lb lean, grass-fed ground beef
2 tsp garlic, minced
2 tsp onion powder
1 tbsp oregano
4-6 leaves of lettuce
½ small avocado, sliced

For the salsa
1 tomatoes, chopped
2 scallions, chopped
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
½ bunch cilantro, diced
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper  to taste

Combine all of the salsa ingredients and mix together in a bowl. Set aside. Add the lean, grass-fed ground beef into bowl and mix in the seasonings. Form into two burgers and grill to your liking. Top the patties with avocado slices and salsa. Wrap two to three lettuce leaves around each burger and serve.  

Makes two burgers.
