5 Ways to Avoid Memorial Day Weight Gain

Memorial Day Weekend is here—but that doesn’t mean time off from diets and weight loss programs. The last thing you want to do after working hard for months is to toss it all to the wind for the holiday weekend. Whether you’re heading out of town or to local barbecues and fetes, you can stay on track and still enjoy yourself. While it’s fine to build in some small splurges throughout the weekend, make sure you don’t go overboard. The tips below will help you have a fun holiday weekend without gaining weight.

1. Move it

Build physical activity into your entire weekend. Exercise will keep your mind off food and give you lots of energy. Continue with your regular exercise program and if you have the day off on Monday, get in an extra workout. Take it a step further by joining in activities taking place at any events you attend, whether it be swimming, surfing or playing in a friendly game of tennis, volleyball or football.

2. Hydrate Properly

One of the best ways to keep weight gain at bay is with proper hydration. When you’re dehydrated, you can easily mistake hunger for thirst and eat unnecessarily. Water also helps fill you up and flushes the toxins from your system. Switch it up by making honey or lemon water to add flavor and more detoxification properties. You can also muddle berries, add cucumber slices or infuse mint into your water.

3. Reach for Smaller Plates

An excellent tactic for minimizing damage at buffets and parties is to use salad or appetizer plates. When you use an entrée plate, it’s a little more difficult to practice portion control. If you use a smaller plate and eat slowly, chances are you’ll fill up and keep your calorie count down.

4. Plan Ahead

Think about everything on the agenda for the weekend and put a plan in place. If you’re planning a road trip or a beach day, pack healthy snacks so you won’t be tempted to hit a drive-thru. If you have an event in the evening, don’t go on an empty stomach. Have a protein- or fiber-rich snack beforehand so you don’t overeat when you get there.

5. Imbibe Carefully

While it’s important to stay hydrated, what you drink plays a big role. Avoid sugary juices, sodas and mixed cocktails. If you plan to imbibe, stick to low-calorie options like white wine spritzers. Drink a glass of water in between each alcoholic drink and do not drink too much. Too much of a buzz will make you lose your inhibitions and eat all the wrong things.
